What are keywords and why do I need them?

Keywords are the words or phrases that website owners wish their website to show up for on search engine results pages. These are generally terms which describe what the website is about.

Why do I need keywords?

Without optimising a website to include certain keywords, search engines are unable to decipher what the website is about. How is a robotic algorithm meant to know that an online sports shop has information about football boots unless it includes the term ‘football boots’ in its copy?

For this reason, optimising for keywords is key process within a search engine optimisation (SEO) process.

How do I optimise a website?

The SEO process isn’t a simple as cramming a website with as many keywords as possible. Google actually punishes any website which spam their copy full of keywords without sounding natural.

A more successful method of optimising websites is to include relevant keywords in places where search engines can easily find them; such as in web page titles, meta descriptions, image descriptions and near the top of any copy.

How to I pick the right keywords?

The aim of search engines is to provide information relevant to the keywords being typed into their website. It is for this reason that the keywords you choose to optimise a website with must be relevant to what your website is about. It is also sensible to pick keywords which a lot of people are searching for in order to drive as much traffic as possible.

There are plenty of website which can indicate the popularity of keywords but it is good to optimise a website for a whole range of short-tail (popular) and long-tail (more detailed, less popular) keywords.

Long-tail keywords will drive less traffic to a website, but your website is more likely to rank higher for these terms and users finding your website via these are more likely to find the information or product they are looking for.

Choosing keywords is a simple process once you know what you’re aiming for. This article should help website owners adequately optimise their website for search engines.

  3. Choosing keyword is not that much easy. Because it is the base of your optimization. If you chose wrong keyword, even mistakenly, all your work will be ruined. Further content writing using those keywords is like an art.

  4. Keyword research is an important stage while starting any SEO project. Keywords are of two types 1. Long tail keywords and 2. short tail keywords. Always start with long tail keywords because it gives easy and quick results in SERP. when your some keywords are up in SERP then go with short tail or one word keyword.

  5. For some businesses, the most frequently typed keyword phrases may not necessarily be the ones associated with revenue. But I agree that keyword research is an important step in search engine optimization.
